Cameron Green could get one step closer to making his international debut after Marcus Stoinis sustained a side injury at Australia’s inaugural ODI against India, the SCG on Friday

Stoinis has left the field two balls in his seventh game and although Australia made the decision not to bring him back as a precaution, Stoinis will have a scan done on Friday night, too, to quickly settle between games – the second game will take place on Sunday instead – seems to make it unlikely that he will be available for this

Stoinis, who ducked a total of 374 players with the first ball in Australia, has a history of side injuries, which he also sustained at the 2019 World Cup

Green, the all-rounder from Western Australia who was also featured on the test team, was chosen largely for his first-class record, although his List A numbers were more modest

“Cross your fingers [Stoinis] is fine when he’s not someone who has to come in and probably someone who might have to run over Cameron like that,” said Steven Smith. “He started off really well in the Shield season, he is a brilliant talent

“I faced him this afternoon before the game about a couple of balls in the nets It’s the first time I’ve seen him bowl and he throws a heavy ball. He looks an impressive talent and if he gets the chance he can hopefully grab it with both hands “

Prior to the series, Australia coach Justin Langer had said that Green would only play on the ODI side if he was able to play a full part of the bowling attack, and although Green was in the final two rounds of the Sheffield Shield returned to action with the ball for the first time in a year, his role was limited to four-over-spells

Another option that Australia has on their roster is Moises Henriques, who was recalled for the first time since 2017 and is also a comparable replacement for Stoinis.Other names would be Sean Abbott as an all-rounder with speed bowling or Ashton Agar, who would represent another spinner on the front line
