ZURICH (21 February): Switzerland could pass on the doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccination it had ordered with the country to approve the shot, reported the newspaper NZZ am Sonntag

Earlier this month, Switzerland asked for more data on effectiveness and quality before giving the green light to the shot already approved by the European Union

NZZ am Sonntag said there was speculation among local authorities that the government was planning to cancel their order, a situation that could arise if tests show the drug is not sufficiently effective

“It is still unclear what will happen to AstraZeneca,” said Nora Kronig, Vice Director of the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG), opposite the newspaper, “There are plans to pass on the material”

Switzerland, which has ordered 5.3 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, await results from studies in North and South America after previous tests have failed to provide clear data including effectiveness in the elderly

France, Belgium and Germany are among the countries in the European Union that recommend that the Oxford vaccine only be given under 65 years of age

The withdrawal from the AstraZeneca sales contract is currently not an option, Kronig told NZZ am Sonntag. However, this will be checked if necessary, she added

A spokeswoman for AstraZeneca told the newspaper that once the vaccine has been approved, Switzerland could quickly get supplies
