Laurie Daley has called for the NRL All Stars game to be played by Test and Country of Origin rules after the annual clash in Farcical ended scenes on Saturday night
A penalty from Latrell Mitchell in the 79 Minute secured the indigenous All Stars a 10:10 tie in a willing, exciting fight against the Maori All Stars
However, players and fans seemed confused as to why the game didn’t go into overtime like a normal NRL game
“I didn’t know there wasn’t a golden point, I just probably thought it was just going to be normal rules,” said Daley, coach of the indigenous All Stars, after the game
“We wanted to try, but we don’t know what happened on the field”
Daley added that given the intensity of the game and the passion of the players, rule changes are warranted for an end result
Maori’s coach David Kidwell and indigenous half Cody Walker who ran Daley’s squad also said they thought it was a golden point scenario
But Kidwell said the outcome was less important than the importance of entertaining the crowd and looking at the greater scope of the game
“Both teams got into each other and when I mentioned we were there for entertainment you know it was entertainment,” he said
“Ultimately, the game is for both cultures so that we can lead our communities, inspire the youth, and make sure we are good role models
“It would have been good to win it, but at the end of the day you know there’s a bigger picture and I think both cultures put it there tonight I’m proud of my players”
However, many fans and commentators were angry about the draw, demanding the golden point in future All-Star clashes
All-Stars are certainly the only senior rep game that doesn’t have extra time to tie. Why? #NRLAllStars
I’m not generally a fan of Golden Point in rugby league, but if ever a concept for Golden Point is to the ground it’s the All-Stars Match, at least a draw in a Premier League still means 1 Point What is a tie doing here? #NRLAllStars
The indigenous team spent most of the game on Saturday night in Townsville, playing from behind, while the Maori took a 10-2 lead
The full-back was the assistant for the only attempt to hit Alex Johnston with a neat kick to score In the 64 In the 2nd minute he managed to bring the sideline to 10: 8, and the indigenous team threatened rival with a grandstand finish
With his team desperately holding on to the lead for the final two minutes, Maori striker James Fisher-Harris was punished for tackling the dummy half without the ball right on his goal line and Mitchell leveled the points from the front
The 20thA crowd of 206 yelled at the indigenous side for another attack, but the sound of the hooter ended the match
Fisher-Harris earned the Preston Campbell Medal for Best Player on the Field despite his late infraction, while both teams will share the Arthur Beetson Trophy in view of the draw
After three memorable clashes between these two teams in the last three years, the record is now one win apiece and one draw
