The number of people who are called upon to protect in England will increase sharply

An additional 1, 7 million people are expected to be added to the 2.3 million already on the list

Half of the group have not yet been vaccinated and are now being urgently prioritized by their local GPs

It comes after a new model is developed that takes additional factors into account, not just health

This calculation includes things like ethnicity, deprivation (by zip code) and weight to help determine a person’s risk of getting seriously ill if they catch Covid

Prof Andrew Hayward, a member of the Advisory Group on New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats (Nervtag) who was involved in the modeling, said they look at a “combination of factors” like age, ethnicity, and chronic illness and put them together to get a score to reach

He told BBC Radio 4’s PM program that this score can “rank people in the population more or less according to their degree of risk” and “identify those who are in that area to say:” You should be prioritized for the vaccine and you are at risk similar to that on the screening list ‘”

So far, only people with certain diseases or certain treatment methods have been recommended until March shield

The new model was developed following work by the University of Oxford, which examined the characteristics of people who died in the first wave in order to better understand the risk

Medical records were searched to identify high-risk patients based on their combined risk factors

They are now receiving letters from the NHS informing them of their new status This means they are entitled to statutory sick pay, prioritization for online shopping slots, and help collecting medication

According to Hugh Pym, the BBC’s health editor, some local authorities with areas of high deprivation will now have an important role in contacting people to see what support they need

Cllr Neil Nerva, Brent Council director of public health in North West London, told BBC News: “We have 17000 People Providing Protection Today’s news means we have 12 more in the next two weeks000 people over 70 and another 12000 under 70 will shield “

He added: “I think this shows very clearly the health inequalities that exist in a neighborhood like Brent”

Of the 17 million people who were newly added to the list, around 900000 have already received a vaccination offer because they were over 70 years old

The remainder are believed to fall into one of the vaccination priority groups next to be invited to vaccination

This means that they will receive the offer a few weeks later than if they had originally been in the protection group

The shield was reintroduced in Tier 4 areas from mid-December, before expanding at the national level as soon as the third lockdown was announced in early January

Unlike the initial ban, people who shield themselves are advised to leave their homes to play sports

Government guidelines strongly advise people who are extremely clinically vulnerable to stay home at all times, apart from exercising or seeing a doctor’s appointment

You should also try to stay 2 meters away from other people in your household, especially if they are showing symptoms of the virus or have been instructed to self-isolate

People on the list are still advised to protect themselves even after receiving two doses of the vaccine

The list does not include all elderly people, although they are strongly advised to distance themselves socially

England’s assistant chief physician, Dr Jenny Harries said, “All of these individuals who are being identified for the first time are those who did not have an individual clinical condition that we were previously able to identify from the Clinically Extremely At Risk Group, but they are people who have multiple personal risk factors and have underlying health conditions that move them to a higher risk group “

She said adding people to the screening list ensured that “those who are most susceptible to Covid can benefit from vaccine protection as well as increased advice and support should they choose”

Phillip Anderson of the MS Society said some people with multiple sclerosis were included on the screening list

He said it would be a “big shock” to people who may have to make “drastic changes” in their lives

The Westminster government said the model had been shared with the other nations of the UK who would individually decide how to use it

There are currently no plans to officially expand the screening list in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland in the same way as in England

The Welsh Government said the same computer model had been used to add people with chronic kidney disease and adults with Down syndrome to the list of patients who are extremely clinically susceptible

In Northern Ireland, general practitioners and hospital doctors can add individual patients to the screening list if they are deemed extremely vulnerable due to a number of factors
