Report and highlights from the Sky Bet Championship clash between Swansea and Watford at Liberty Stadium when Jamal Lowe’s doubles won the Swans after Tom Cleverley put the Hornets in the lead
Jamal Lowe scored twice as Swansea climbed to second place in the Sky Bet championship with a 2-1 comeback win over promotion rivals Watford
The ardent Lowe scored six goals for Swansea in as many games to inflict a first defeat on new Watford manager Xisco Munoz, who had led his side through Tom Cleverley
Swansea’s fifth win in eight games puts them in the automatic promotion places over Brentford and six points over Watford, which drops to sixth place
The Swans’ previous two home games had been marred by hollowing out and ridicule outside Liberty Stadium as players grabbed the knee to fight racial injustice
The Welsh club have opened an investigation into the matter and were relieved to see no such protest before the game this time
Swansea had the best defense in the championship with just 12 goals conceded before kick-off
But center-back Ryan Bennett was absent with hamstring problems and Swansea suffered another blow in warm-up when Joel Latibeaudiere was injured and had to be replaced by Ryan Manning
Swansea started after just one loss in seven games with high confidence on the front foot
Connor Roberts’ rides were a major threat on the right, and the full-back flashed in the center of the six yard box where Korey Smith just didn’t make meaningful touch
Watford responded when former Swansea lender Ben Wilmot Lowe robbed the corner flag and Andre Gray almost crossed his back home on the near post
Andre Ayew headed to Swansea in an action-packed opening, but Watford was ahead after 20 minutes
The home team struggled to clear after being caught from behind, and Cleverley’s drive from outside the box was too hot for Freddie Woodman to handle
Roberts wanted a penalty when he fell under the challenge of Jeremy Ngakia, but the Wales international was soon back on his feet to create a chance that Jay Fulton narrowly missed
Swansea continued to press for an equalizer and Ben Foster fell from Ayew before making an even better stop to deny Smith
But the former English goalkeeper didn’t stand a chance when the formidable Marc Guehi drove forward and found Smith
He helped Lowe on the edge of the box and the formidable striker scored his fifth goal in six games at the far post
Swansea started the second half after they finished the first and Jake Bidwell had the ball in the net from a Roberts cross just for an assistant flag to break the festivities
Watford fell behind, however, when Smith’s center avoided Foster and showed Lowe the predatory instincts that have served him so well over the past few weeks by walking home at the far post
Lowe’s second goal brought a strong reaction from the Hornets, and Troy Deeney and Francisco Sierralta had both blocked efforts with courageous home defense
Skipper Deeney shot past the far post, but Swansea weathered the storm and was reinforced in the final minutes as Morgan Gibbs-White was welcomed back after three months
Steve Cooper of Swansea: “He wasn’t under any pressure from me or the players [to score earlier in the season] In terms of performance level I think he was excellent all season but what for a token of resilience to keep going
“The plan is to carry on, that is the focus. He is making good progress and we asked him to do things that were different for him in the past. He was a winger and we got him with a certain idea, to build it It still builds on what we want, but it will never fail due to a lack of attempts “
Watfords Xisco Munoz: “I am satisfied with the guys because they give the maximum. We grow up day by day That is our path The team had personality and passion, we had good chances in the penalty area
“So there are good things that we have to keep going this is the most important thing We know our mistakes, this is our job Sometimes in football when you lose you have this moment I like the guys reaction when we get the second Collect goal “
