A number of streamed musical events, shows, and new releases mark David Bowie’s birthday and the fifth anniversary of his death

The musician would have turned 74 on Friday, while Sunday will be five years since he died of cancer

A star-studded tribute concert and his 2015 stage musical Lazarus will both be streamed over the weekend

Two previously unreleased Bowie tracks have also been released while his music has now arrived on TikTok

The tribute gig, titled A Bowie Celebration: Just For One Day, will feature Bowie’s former bandmates alongside stars like Boy George, Duran Duran, Trent Reznor, Adam Lambert, Gary Barlow and actor Gary Oldman

From 6:00 p.m. on Friday (2:00 p.m. GMT on Saturday), the show will be directed by Bowie’s longtime pianist Mike Garson and available 24 hours a day

Duran Duran released a timely cover of Bowie’s track five years before the show, “My teenage life was all about David Bowie,” said singer Simon Le Bon

“He’s the reason I started writing songs. A part of me still can’t believe in his death five years ago, but maybe that’s because there’s a part of me that he’s in still lives and always will be “

Bowie’s previously unreleased covers of Bob Dylan’s Tryin ‘to Get to Heaven and John Lennon’s mother were also released on Friday.

BBC Four is hosting a Bowie Night on Friday, while BBC Radio 4 and 6 Music have special programs that include Bowie: Dancing Out in Space, which will air simultaneously on both stations on Sunday

In it, producer Tony Visconti describes how Bowie and Lennon first awkwardly met in a New York hotel room prior to their collaboration on the cover of The Beatles’ Across the Universe and his own 1975 song Fame

“He was afraid to meet John Lennon,” says Visconti. “Around one in the morning I knocked on the door and for the next two hours John Lennon and David didn’t speak to each other

“Instead, David sat on the floor with an art pad and charcoal sketching things, completely ignoring Lennon

“After about two hours, he [John] finally said to David, ‘Rip the pad in half and give me some sheets of paper. I want to draw you, so David said,’ Oh, that’s a good idea, ‘and he opened it So John started doing cartoons of David and David started doing the same thing about John and they kept exchanging them and then they started laughing and that broke the ice “

In the meantime, Stardust will be released this coming weekend, a biopic about Bowie’s trip to Ziggy Stardust with singer and actor Johnny Flynn

Bowie’s family didn’t bless it, however, which means the filmmakers weren’t allowed to use any of his music.Instead, Flynn plays as Bowie songs from Jacques Brel, The Yardbirds, and one of Flynn’s own compositions
