Daniil Medvedev made his idol John McEnroe proud and delivered a spectacular multilingual burst to keep his hopes alive for the Australian Open at Melbourne Park

World Nr4 extended its winning streak to 17 games with a 6-3 6-3 4-6 3-6 6-0 win against the Serb Filip Krajinovic on Saturday

But not until his coach stormed out of Rod Laver Arena in the middle of the game after receiving stunning verbal sprays from Medvedev in Russian, French and English

“He said shortly before leaving that he was sure that I would win the match, but that he would leave me alone to be calmer,” said Medvedev

“So I won’t tell anymore because it was a good thing and luckily I won”

The 25-year-old’s performance impressed McEnroe, the original tennis super brat, who said in a comment that Medvedev was his favorite player on tour

“He is an idol for many children. He is a legend of our sport and what else can I say if someone like him says something good about you?

Incredible, it was Medvedev’s first win in five sets after losing his last six games – including the 2019 US Open final against Rafael Nadal

“I remember a lot of those games, three or four, I was a breakup,” he said

“I always say experience is important to me. Once I had the break today, I was under control unlike previous games where I could get tight and start speeding things up and making some mistakes

“I was very calm here to finish the game and I was very happy with my first five-set win”

Medvedev had lost just one set in his last six games this summer as he led Russia to the ATP Cup and then continued his hot run at Melbourne Park

Next on Monday he will play against the unseeded American Mackenzie McDonald to earn an overdue maiden major

McDonald went into the fourth round with a 7-6 (9-7) 6-1 6-4 win over South African Lloyd Harris

“He’s a really tricky opponent, a great player takes the ball early,” said Medvedev about the world 192

“I would say I even play some sort of Roger (Federer) style, trying to race the net and the balls

Medvedev could face his triumphant ATP Cup team-mate Andrey Rublev if the two Russians win their next games

Rublev with the seventh seed meets Casper Ruud with the 24th Seeds after the Norwegian beat the Moldovan Radu Albot with 6-1 5-7 6-4 6-4

The fifth Greek seed Stefanos Tsitsipas also advanced on Saturday with a 6-4 6-1 6-1 win over Sweden’s Mikael Ymer
