Genome sequencing has confirmed the latest case of COVID-19 in Queensland (a cleaner in a quarantine hotel in Queensland), has the British variant
Dr Queensland Chief Health Officer Jeanette Young has precautionary enforced restrictions on vulnerable facilities in the greater Brisbane area as contact tracing efforts continue
“We are proceeding very carefully on this case as we now know for sure that this person has the UK variant of the virus,” she said
“There is evidence that this variant is 70 percent more contagious than other strains,” said Dr Young “So I am quickly taking these decisive steps to protect our most vulnerable facilities”’
Dr Young said visitors will be restricted to elderly care, hospitals, disability services, and correctional facilities, and those restrictions will be imposed immediately
“These restrictions apply to the Metro North, Metro South, and West Moreton Hospital and Health Service regions,” she said
“And as always, anyone with symptoms should immediately report for testing and isolate until they get the results – especially everyone in Brisbane”
Queensland Health advice is that anyone who has been to the locations listed below, whether or not they have symptoms, should be tested and isolated until they get their result
Even if a negative test result is received, you should continue to look critically for symptoms and test again if necessary
