Croatian tennis star Donna Vekic couldn’t hold her emotions after taking a notable comeback win against Estonian player Kaia Kanepi in the third round of the Australian Open 2021 on Saturday

The Vekic in 33rd returned from a defeat and showed exemplary strength and resilience to win the next two sets and advance into the previous quarters

The Estonian went into the duel as the favorite after he had thrown defending champion Sofia Kenin out of Melbourne Park in the preliminary round

Kanepi appeared to be on track to book a berth before the quarter when she took the opening set 7-5, but the Croat performed a setback, taking the second set to a tie and winning it 7-6 ( 7: 2)

Vekic even saved a match point in the second set to bring it to a tie-breaker, very much against the course of the game

With the momentum she really had, Vekic broke Kanepi’s serve to retreat in the crucial set before finally coming out on the winning side of the swing fight

During her interview in court after the hard-fought victory, the 24-year-old Croatian couldn’t hold back tears of joy

Vekic shared her thoughts on the game between tears and called it a “tough match” She credited her opponent for playing “incredible” tennis, especially in the second set

“I had to fight to the end and I’m just happy to be through,” said the Croat

Vekic was relieved to have fought past a diabolical opponent and made it to the next round, and said she was desperate for the comfort of an “ice bath” before focusing on the next battle

The Croatian meets the American Jennifer Brady, who brought the Slovenian Kaja Juvan 6: 1, 6: 3 into the lead to prepare the duel before the quarters

“I have to try to recover, train tomorrow and prepare for the next game,” said Vekic when they met in the fourth round

However, it won’t have an easy time of it against the American, who now has three direct wins at a trot. Expect another exciting fight when the two compete in Round 4 of the Australian Open
