The word “cancel” has become fashionable in recent years. If you vaguely “cancel” someone on the Internet, it means calling them out for bad behavior, stopping them with everything they do, and possibly supporting them To boycott it’s a slippery term, but it’s been popping up a lot lately, and actors, athletes, politicians, and other public figures are increasingly concerned about saying or doing the wrong thing so that it doesn’t get canceled

Is canceling a good thing? Bad thing? It depends on who you ask.Personally, I like to take it on a case-by-case basis.Sometimes someone says or does something really ignorant and potentially harmful and could probably be brought up in a different perspective.Other times, Twitter just seems to be in a foam and a dog poo to whip someone over the smallest little thing

So canceling is the best and worst phenomenon, but it’s definitely a phenomenon that is thriving in our current age of social media, with everyone stuck at home in 2020, it was a banner year for cancellations and it was a choice So you know the tension has been high. Here were some of the highlights, at least on the sci-fi / fantasy / fandom page

Gina Carano plays Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, one of the most popular streaming shows right now, and she got some feather duster this year

The first bump on the road came in September when people asked her to add her pronouns to her Twitter bio and she added the words “boop / bop / beep” to mock a practice that helped supposed to avoid online abuse Some people calmly tried to explain why this was hurtful while others threw insults at them It was a pretty normal cancellation

The next bump came later when President Donald Trump launched unsubstantiated conspiracy theories about electoral fraud after unprecedentedly refusing to recognize President-elect Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election, Carano tweeted messages in line with those conspiracies, leading to tweets like this led:

Recall that Gina Carano is a racist, transphobic, death threatening, trump support pandemic that denies bullying x

Nothing, actually, as far as we can tell, Carano is still part of The Mandalorian and has good relationships with the cast, and since she continued to mock mail-in polls and vaccinations through December, it didn’t seem to have much of an impact on Or them has buried himself out of defiance; the same thing matters

This is one of the big problems with cancellation I think: it’s not very good to achieve your goal provided your goal is to change the mind of the canceled person. So often, they just dig deeper a; We’ll see an extreme example of this later
