Chelsea moved to the top of the Premier League after a solid win at Newcastle United, their fifth straight win in all competitions, if only for a few hours

Federico Fernandez’s own goal set the Blues on their way, the Argentine defender poking the ball across his own line under pressure from Ben Chilwell

Chelsea exuded quality, Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow made excellent saves to defeat the excellent Timo Werner, as well as a close-range header from Tammy Abraham

But Abraham made a safe finish after Werner’s pass after Newcastle threatened Isaac Hayden and Joelinton. Sean Longstaff hit the crossbar for the home team towards the end

Chelsea, who started on day five, are in the lead in terms of goal difference ahead of Leicester, who are at Liverpool on Sunday

Aston Villa, hosts Brighton at 3:00 p.m. GMT, could replace Chelsea with a big win at the summit, while Tottenham, who maintain Manchester City at 5:30 p.m., take it to the summit with a win

Chelsea are not only leading their group in the Champions League, but are now at the top of the Premier League for the first time since Frank Lampard took office in July 2019

This was the first of nine games in the next four weeks for Lampard’s side, and the Chelsea boss had to plan it without several key players still on international service 48 hours before that game

It had led Lampard to demand that Saturday’s early kick-off games be canceled immediately after an international break, but the Blues got off to a violent start, giving Newcastle a cold

Werner and Abraham had already been defeated by Darlow when Chelsea took the early lead Fernandez accidentally turned Mason Mount’s cross past his own goalkeeper after a short corner

That was 35 Chelsea’s goal in 14 league and cup games, but it should have been more before halftime

Werner, whose goal was rejected late on offside, was consistently a creative force, but the German striker was also wasteful

Antonio Rüdiger, who started in place of 36-year-old Thiago Silva, who played for Brazil mid-week, marked his first start of the season with an important block to deny Allan Saint-Maximin when the Blues finished sixth at zero in seven games

Abraham’s second goal in as many league games made the points before Mount almost added a third

Wilson, who went missing with a hamstring injury, has scored six of his team’s top ten goals this season, but Newcastle never recovered from a slow start

Darlow kept his side in the match with some excellent saves before Abrahams ended the game at the end of the second half

The loss of Jamaal Lascelles to injury did not help Newcastle’s cause The captain didn’t show up at the beginning of the second half after falling badly

Steve Bruce sent Miguel Almiron, who only returned from international service with Paraguay on Friday, and Andy Carroll to try to save a point

Carroll appeared ready to score his first goal since returning to Newcastle for a second spell 15 months ago, but his injury-time attempt was deflected wide to a corner

While Newcastle will visit Crystal Palace in the Premier League next Friday (20:00 GMT), Chelsea will face Rennes in Group E of the Champions League on Tuesday in France (17:55) They then host Spurs on Sunday, May 29th November (16:30)
