UPDATED with tweet and video: longtime CNN newscaster Brooke Baldwin today announced her surprising retirement from the cable news network, who she is leaving in April to focus on “improving and improving the lives of exceptional Americans to use my passion for storytelling ”

“Before we get started, I’d like to start with some personal news,” Baldwin said at the start of her 3 pm ET show, “I’m leaving CNN in April”

She continued, “Leave me behind after working my way up on local news for most of my 20s, I joined this network in 2008 – in the middle of the great recession as a freelancer I remember putting my name on a post – I wrote it and taped it outside this temporary office, determined to fulfill my dream of becoming a full-time CNN correspondent ”

The Peabody Award winner joined CNN in 2008 and is also the creator and host of the CNN digital series American Woman, which focuses on the stories of groundbreaking women who broke barriers in their respective fields and are now helping other women do the same to do

Thanking outgoing CNN President Jeff Zucker and the “very big CNN family”, Baldwin said, “I don’t have a job to jump into right now and yes, I feel very vulnerable”

She continued, “For a decade, I have never taken for granted the tremendous responsibility and privilege of working with some of the most talented producers and photojournalists, as well as correspondents and anchors out there, as we have addressed most of our eras as urgent and major stories, conflict, terrorism, environmental and natural disasters, the wrath of gun violence, royal weddings, my American Woman series, the social justice movement that defines our culture, and a pandemic that changed the world

“I wanted to be part of the best of the best in cable news and journalism, and as a native of Atlantis, this would be my hometown dream. Little did I know I wasn’t going to just go one to make this dream come true, I would thrive in these surroundings and land my own two hour show in the afternoon at the age of 31 ”

Baldwin, a Peabody Award finalist and a News Emmy nominee, said she was writing her first book in two years, HarperCollins will be releasing Huddle: How Women Unlock Their Collective Power in April

“You know, I just have to do more,” she said, “more I have to do more outside of this place, outside the walls of this place, a place I was allowed to call home for now 13 years”


In addition to her anchor duties, Baldwin has covered from Europe, Africa and the Middle East during her time on CNN.She covered the biggest news in the last decade – from the Boston Marathon bombings to natural disasters, from government shutdowns to national ones Elections

In 2012, she reported live from Newtown, CT in the days following the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
