Turcotte found itself in a social media storm this week after asking an awkward question to star guest Mamadi Fara Camara

Dany Turcotte announced on Thursday afternoon that he was stepping down from the Radio Canada talk show Tout le monde en parle after 17 years. During this time, Turcotte played the role of “fou du roi”, a mischievous friend for the dead Host Guy A Lepage

As such, he was delighted to make fun of the wide variety of guests at the show and to offer bitter farewells on special cards given to guests at the end of their segment

His jokes didn’t always hit the mark, however. Turcotte, who has often become controversial over the years, received widespread criticism this week after he later asked an “inappropriate” question of Sunday star guest Mamadi Fara Camara had

Originally from Guinea, Camara spent six days in jail after being falsely accused of assaulting a police officer on January 28

The traumatic incident began when the resident of the Parc Extension was stopped and a ticket was issued to use his mobile phone while driving

“Will you still be using your cell phone while driving?” Turcotte asked Camara about his devastating testimony of his brutal arrest and the hardship he and his pregnant wife have endured since then (Camara replied that he did not use his cell phone while driving)

In a statement on Facebook, Turcotte apologized for the joke, saying he missed his target and just wanted to make Camara smile. Since then, he has received a barrage of “accusations and hatred” on social media

On Monday he shared a link on Twitter for a crowdfunding campaign in support of Camara Then he showed a screenshot of an SMS exchange on Facebook in which he apologized to Camara “No problem, I did not take it personally” replied Camara

Wednesday La Presse columnist Hugo Dumas wrote that Turcotte has been fiddling for months and that he has apparently been unable to adjust to the show’s more serious tone and live format during the pandemic

In his Facebook post, Turcotte admitted that he has had trouble finding his place on the program since the pandemic began. “Disrupted by multiple social media storms over the years, my confidence dwindled bit by bit,” wrote he, “and I was paralyzed by the fear of making a mistake””

He said he agreed with his decision and the Sunday show was his last.In a statement, Radio-Canada stated that Lepage will host the rest of the season alone and that Turcott’s tenure will be highlighted on the show later in the season

In the same statement, Lepage said: “It is with great sadness that I learned today that Dany has resigned … Our complicity has become a friendship over the years, and for some time now he has been sharing his discomfort, his role in the context of one.” Sustaining pandemic with no audience, where humor was rare and tense

“I fully respect his decision. I’m losing a valuable colleague, which hurts, but I keep a friend who inspires me”

Dany Meloul, Television Director at Radio-Canada, said that “Dany (Turcotte) certainly deserves a Carte Chouchou for his contribution to the great success of Tout le monde en parle over the years”

When in doubt, Meloul also assured fans that the show, which has become a “not to be missed Sunday rendezvous where we bring up social and cultural issues that reach a wide audience,” will be back next season
