Nashville police on Wednesday defended their failure to follow up on a 2019 lead that RV bomber Anthony Warner was making explosives, saying the police had no “likely reason” to pursue the case

Police chief John Drake said at a meeting that the police returned to the house several times after Warner’s girlfriend at the time complained in August 2019 – but never spoke to him and the case had become dark

“The officers went by for at least a week or more and knocked on the door,” Drake said at the meeting, streamed on WKRN-TV. “They went by, drove several times”

“You had no reasonable suspicion of going to a judge,” said Drake. “You could have done it, but it would have been refused”

“Officers didn’t take it lightly,” he said. “They went back, knocked on the door, they went several times, they followed with the hazardous materials team”

“I think the officials did everything they could legally,” added the boss. I mean we could have followed up more. Looking back is 20-20 ”

Sixteen months later, Warner detonated a bomb in his motor home on Christmas morning in front of an ATCSSEAND CHART facility, killing himself, injuring three people, damaging 41 buildings and disrupting communications across much of the southeast
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department admitted this week that Warner’s girlfriend and her lawyer told police officers on August 21, 2019 that Warner was “building bombs in his resident’s RV trailer,” the Tennessean said in a report
The woman’s attorney also told police that Warner “speaks a lot about the military and bomb making” and “knows what he does and is able to make a bomb”

In addition to tracking himself, Drake said his department had notified the FBI and other federal agencies, but there were no reports of Warner

The boss said Wednesday that there were never any reports that Warner had a history of violence, and that he did not have a marijuana charge on his file until 1978

He said police are still trying to compile details around the tip for 2019 and have not even determined whether this investigation has been completed or remains open
