Military leaders and state officials sent hundreds of other National Guardsmen from DC., Maryland and Virginia went to Washington on Wednesday to control pro-Trump rioters who violated the U S. Capitol

The Pentagon approved a request from DC. Mayor Muriel Bowser mobilizes all 1100 members of the DC. According to spokesman Jonathan Hoffman, the National Guard should help federal law enforcement officials control the riot. At Bowser’s request earlier this week, Division 350 D mobilized National Guard troops ahead of planned protests, but these troops are in charge of crowd control and have not been in the Capitol

After the protesters walked to the building, Bowser asked for additional guardsmen Army officials originally expressed concern because the original agreement stipulated that guardsmen would not have contact with civilians in order to avoid politicizing the military, a defense official said

Top Pentagon officials have said repeatedly over the past few weeks that the military would play no role in determining the election result

It took Defense officials about 30 minutes Wednesday to process questions related to Bowser’s request for additional assistance, make a decision, and seek approval from the Secretary of Defense, Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy said during a press conference with the Mayor

“Lots of questions were asked, a bit of confusion, but when we were working on it we decided about half an hour later to mobilize all of the D.C. National Guard, “said McCarthy

The Pentagon was heavily criticized in June when the National Guards helped clear Lafayette Square of peaceful protesters so that President Donald Trump could stage a photo op with a Bible in front of a church on Monday, the guard announced that their staff will be unarmed and will not wear protective clothing

On Wednesday, after McCarthy spoke to Bowser on the phone, he worked with Acting Secretary of Defense Chris Miller to find a solution

The Justice Department will oversee the operation, Hoffman said. A second defense official said these guardsmen would be armed if Bowser gave permission

Washington’s neighboring states are also dispatching personnel to respond to the incidents, Virginia Gov Ralph Northam said on Twitter that members of the state National Guard as well as 200 Virginia state police officers, after consulting with congressional officials, will help respond to the riots in Maryland Gov Larry Hogan also tweeted that he sent in about 500 guardsmen

Thousands of Trump supporters came to the capital to protest President-elect Joe Biden’s victory after Trump made false claims of election fraud for weeks. The rioters quickly overpowered Capitol police, broke into and even reached the building the Senate

Legislators and employees were either evacuated or asked to seek refuge on site. The building has since been freed by rioters

Since the District of Columbia is not a state, requests to activate the National Guard must be approved by the Pentagon Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich) said the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen Mark Milley informed her that the request for additional troops had been approved by the administration, Miller later said in a statement that he had consulted with Vice President Mike Pence and senior congressmen but made no mention of Trump

“Our people are sworn to defend the Constitution and our democratic government, and they will act accordingly,” he said
