“Tonight at sunset, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world are celebrating the beginning of Purim

“This joyful holiday celebrates the salvation of the Jewish people from destruction in the ancient Persian Empire, thanks to the valor of Queen Esther and her uncle Mordechai Purim is a reminder of the resilience and courage of Jewish communities everywhere

“During this special occasion, families and friends often come together to share traditional groceries like hamantaschen, exchange gifts, give something to less fortunate people and read from the Book of Esther. This year’s celebrations are due to the global COVID-19 Pandemic Look Different As we continue to follow public health guidelines to protect each other and our communities, I know the people at home will find ways to celebrate the hope and perseverance in the heart of Purim

“Today we also recognize the significant contributions that Jewish Canadians make to our country. We must always prefer love to hate and work for a Canada that is free from anti-Semitism, xenophobia and prejudice. We can and will hate and Not Tolerating Discrimination in Our Communities I know that together we can build a stronger and more inclusive country
