Reporting on the impact of the coronavirus on the sports world

Former UFC lightweight champion Jose Aldo proved on Saturday that he is far from finished by shaking off a lost skid in three fights for a convincing victory over the ardent Marlon Vera

Aldo (29-7) scored his first win since relegating to £ 135 by claiming a unanimous decision at the UFC Fight Night co-main event within UFC APEX in Las Vegas. All three judges scored the match between Jan. and 28 for the 34 year old Brazilian legend

“It’s important to get back to the profit column and win,” said Aldo. “I trained really hard for it”

The win calmed the talk that Aldo was no longer an elite after entering the bout, having lost five of his last seven, including defeats in championship bouts to Max Holloway (twice) and Petr Yan

Aldo turned the clock back in a way, controlling the distance with hard kicks in his legs, but it was his boxing, including a steady focus on the left hooks on his body, that helped him win the opening round

After a fairly even second round, Aldo consolidated victory in the final round by scoring an early farewell and never letting go of Vera (16-7-1) Aldo took his back and held on tight when Vera was standing and lying on the floor but couldn’t sink into a choke

When asked about his future, Aldo couldn’t help but mention former bantamweight champ TJ Dillashaw, who is returning from a two-year USADA ban in January, as his preferred opponent

“Until the next fight it would be Dillashaw,” Aldo said. “Hey, [UFC President] Dana [White], make it happen”

The defeat for Vera comes fresh from the 28-year-old Ecuadorian’s surprise over Sean O’Malley at UFC 252 in August
