DETROIT – Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon has died as a result of the COVID-19 virus. According to his daughter Tiffani Jackson, 65-year-old Napoleon died on Thursday evening at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit with his family

Napoleon, who was named sheriff in 2009 and was re-elected multiple times, announced that he tested positive for the virus in November 19 the next day he was hospitalized and stayed there until his death

His family posted multiple updates on his condition, hoping throughout the battle that Napoleon would finally fight the virus. Still on Sunday, the family said he appeared to be improving, but his health took a turn as the week wore on

As the news of his death spread, many prominent leaders expressed their grief at the loss, but also their admiration for the life that Napoleon led

“I am broken at the news that my dear friend Benny has died,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer, “Sheriff Napoleon’s love for the people he served has been returned in multiples of his quick laughs, ardent partnership and being I will miss most frank advice He was a very special person Sharon, Tiffani and all his family are in my prayers ”

Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II repeated these views, adding that Napoleon was an ally and advocated changes in the judicial system to improve society

“The death of Sheriff Benny Napoleon is a tremendous loss to the city of Detroit, Wayne County, and the entire state of Michigan,” said Gilchrist by example ”

In addition to serving as Sheriff in Wayne County, Napoleon also served as Detroit Police Chief from 1998 to 2001.In 2013, Napoleon ran for Detroit Mayor and eventually lost to current Mayor Mike Duggan after Duggan learned of Napoleon’s death, he said that he was “shocked and saddened” by the news

“I cannot think of a guide in this city more loved and admired than Benny. He was born in the city, bravely served our community all his adult life, and loved Detroit as much as anyone I have ever known.” “said Duggan

Rev DR Wendell Anthony, president of the Detroit Branch of the NAACP, said Napoleon was a distinguished lawyer who protected his community

“Our hearts are sad and our gratitude has been strengthened by the life of Sheriff Benny Napoleon. Benny wasn’t just a sheriff. He was a guardian who loved and protected this community. He was a selfless warrior for peace through justice,” said Anthony in a statement, “God’s Infinite Blessings to Tiffani and His Family as We Embrace the Men and Women of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department”

Wayne County Attorney Kym Worthy also commended Napoleon for his dedication to the community and friendship

“I can’t even imagine a world without Benny. He was a loved, iconic, and respected police officer. He was progressive and he was old school,” said Worthy. “He was tough and had a heart of gold But most of all, he was a real, caring and loyal friend and colleague I will miss him forever ”

Attorney General Dana Nessel said she built a close relationship with Napoleon when she took office and has relied on Napoleon ever since. Nessel said she admired his work and passion for serving his community

“He was a wonderful man and his death is a loss not only for his family, but also for his many friends and co-workers,” said Nessel. “Benny still had so much life to live; Our community has once again lost someone bigger than life to this vicious pandemic. My heart goes out to Benny’s family. It was an honor and a privilege to call him my sheriff ”
