(pocket lint) – With kids facing another long period of homeschooling during their third lockdown in the UK, parents don’t have laptops or tablets, perhaps wondering how else to enroll in education services at home You can use an Xbox or PlayStation game console instead?

All you need is an Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, PS4 Pro or PS5 and a USB keyboard Your child should have access to online school services like Google Classroom

Here’s our guide to accessing Google Classroom from an Xbox or PlayStation console

The Xbox consoles each have access to Microsoft Edge – the web browser that is pre-installed as part of the Xbox user experience that can be used to access Google Classroom (or any other online education service approved by your child’s school)

1 Connect a wired keyboard to your Xbox One, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S using one of the USB ports on the front or back

2 Press the Xbox button in the top center of a game controller and go to “My Games & Apps”

on the side menu

3 Click “See All,” scroll down to “Apps” and you will see Microsoft Edge in the icons on the right Open It

4 Type ClassroomGoogle Come to the url bar above and log in to your school Gmail account just like on a PC

5 You can either use an Xbox controller to move the cursor or a separate USB mouse plugged into one of the other ports

The PlayStation 4 has its own web browser, which is easy to find on the PlayStation 4 (in the content menu as an icon with WWW written on it) It’s a little trickier on PS5 right now though, as there’s no way to natively open the browser

Instead, you can open System Preferences and then the User Guide which will open an online User Guide in a web browser page so all you need to do is change the URL above, otherwise the rest of the steps are the same

1 Plug a wired keyboard and / or mouse into the USB ports on the PS4 or PS5 – any console should recognize them

2 In the URL bar of the browser, enter classGooglecom, then log in with the details of your child’s school

In some cases, you might not be able to do everything on a laptop or PC, but at least you can access Google Classroom and see what work your teacher has assigned for you

You don’t need a fancy gaming keyboard or something expensive to hook up to a console, just something that works. While in many cases there may be an old USB keyboard lying around, we tested the Xbox with the cheapest USB keyboard too, that we were able to find on Amazon – the Rii RK907 – to check that it worked – and that works too
