Getting ready to go skiing after 300 days, Michaela Schiffrin is looking for an answer to a question she’s been asking herself since her career

“Hopefully it’s a positive experience I don’t mean, ‘I hope I win,’ but I hope it’s a positive experience being a ski rider, and I hope she’s the driving force,” Shiffrin said Thursday, two days before her longest break The ten-year World Cup run is expected to end in a slalom race in Levi, Finland

“I didn’t really feel like it was such a long breather,” she said, “This spring, summer, autumn, the period since my last race has been the busiest, most stressful time of my life. I feel the race will actually be like going on vacation now, I’m so grateful to be here ”

A two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time World Cup champion is close to her first race since January 26th, when she scored her 66th victory in her Super J career in Bulgaria

Her father, Jeff Schiffrin, died suddenly a week later after he had an accident at the family home in Eagle County

Sorrowful Chevrin took a five-week break before trying to return in the mid-March races in Sweden, after losing the overall standings to Federica Brignoni and in the slalom standings against Petra Vlhova However, the event in Sweden was canceled, as well as the rest of the season amid a pandemic Coronavirus

“In February, after several weeks at home, I felt skiing was going to be a cure,” Schiffrin said, “If possible, I wanted to try the race before the season ended but we got to Sweden and tried, and I was ready to go into the starting gate even if it was canceled. This was a really big step. ”

Despite limited training opportunities due to the epidemic, she went most of her time during the summer to take finance, tax and bookkeeping courses in order to keep the family business running, a task her father had previously assumed.

In October, a second attempt to return also failed, as Schiffrin straightened her back a week before the gigantic season opening in Austria.

“I didn’t get a lot of training in it,” she said, “I just managed to slalom with a back injury. We narrowed the focus and worked one hour at a time.”

After being the dominant force in the Women’s World Cup for the past few years, expectations will naturally be high when Chevrine returns to the starting gate, but the American herself now does not know what to really expect.

“I try to keep expectations really low,” she said, but my criteria for the level of skiing I want to achieve is high. I want to skate well which includes speed skating.

While she scored 43 slalom career wins, more than any skater or figure skater in sporting history, records were never the focus of her attention

“Regardless of whether I skate well, if you put in a good effort but it just isn’t what I would have liked, it’s hard to be disappointed with it after all,” Shiffrin said of her approach to the Saturday race

Chevrine took a major lead in both meandering and the World Cup standings in general last season before a break, but insisted that the loss in those titles did not upset her.

“I’m so angry, but not about the way last season ended. I’m upset because my dad died, and I’m upset because I’m feeling lonely most days,” she said, “But on the flip side, I’m so grateful to have my mom here with me so much I’ve never A person driven by anger If you’ve learned something in the last 300 days, it’s that you really have to take what life serves you might not taste good, but you have to eat it anyway.
