Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville has tempered his team’s hopes of winning the Arctic Rally this weekend ahead of the second round of the 2021 World Rally Championship

Team principal Andrea Adamo has stated that “nothing less than a win” is acceptable for the defending champions on their first visit to the WRC in Lapland This is a late COVID replacement for Rally Sweden as the only snow event on the 2021 calendar

Adamo’s statement follows a disappointing start to Hyundai’s 2021 campaign at the Monte Carlo Rally last month, when tire strategy errors hobbled all three of the team’s cars

Neuville finally recovered and was third at its first event alongside new co-driver Martijn Wydaeghe, but after several setbacks, the pairing at the finish was 73 seconds behind winner Sebastien Ogier’s Toyota

Dani Sordo finished fifth after wriggling on the wrong tires on opening day, but 2019 World Champion Ott Tanak was forced out of the race after choosing to only wear a spare tire and two breakdowns to suffer in rapid succession

In Lapland, tire management will once again be an important issue this weekend after the record showed that even within the Arctic Circle, large areas of snow are cleared after the first pass on each stage

It is also understood that Toyota successfully got promoters to send a snow plow through to minimize the delay that fresh snow is causing for its drivers Sebastien Ogier and Elfyn Evans, who start off Neuville on the opening day

“I can’t say I was 100% happy about the preparation and feeling, even if it wasn’t bad,” Neuville said

“We suspect that the Toyota will be very fast from the experience of recent years [at the Rally Sweden] and also from the speed of Monte Carlo: They were strong

“So let’s try to take advantage of a good road position compared to the two [Toyotas] in front of me. We’re going to try to fight, but I’m not sure it will be possible to get the maximum possible”

Neuville’s caution before the event begins may lack some of Adamo’s bullish gloss, but the Belgian remains convinced that another strong result could be achieved by Sunday afternoon

“I think we probably had better chances of winning Monte Carlo than winning [this weekend] from my perspective,” he said

“But to be honest, I’ve always had a good speed in Sweden the last few years and I hope that with clever driving we can still bring home a good position for the team”
