Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Dec. February, Moscow was ready to sever relations with the EU if sanctions were imposed that threaten its economy in connection with the detention of anti-corruption activist and opposition politician Alexei Navalny last month
“We don’t want to isolate ourselves from international life, but we have to be prepared for it,” Lavrov said during a television interview
“We assume that we are ready [to break the relationship] when, as we have often felt, we see again that some areas are being sanctioned that threaten our economy, even the most acute ones “Lavrov added
The comments following a meeting between Lavrov and the top diplomat of the European Union, Josep Borrell, planned by observers last week for failing to hold Russia accountable for the arrest and detention of Navalny
Lavrov’s comments confirm bne IntelliNews’ analysis of the meeting “Kremlin is setting new rules for post-Trump relations” that Russia used the meeting and Borrell’s humiliation to send a very clear message with a new tough line Lavrov has since pointed out that, while Russia is ready to negotiate with the West on things like arms control agreements, it is unwilling to accept a dual policy that threatens sanctions in parallel
After Borrell’s visit, Lavrov told the new US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in a tweet that an offer to sign a commitment to reduce nuclear weapons was “still on the table”, but that it was expressly given a second commitment. do not “associate each other with interfering in internal affairs” that must be signed together
Lavrov’s statement of Dec. February is another clarification of this new hard line, with the Kremlin now categorically rejecting any pressure from the West on the Navalny affair or anything it sees as a domestic matter, and stands ready to sever diplomatic relations with the EU if sanctions are in place Russia’s long-time foreign minister, however, left room for purely symbolic sanctions to be imposed as part of a face rescue exercise for the EU
“We do not want to isolate ourselves from international life, but we must be prepared. You want peace – get ready for war,” Lavrov said
Lavrov called the EU an “unreliable partner” during his joint press conference with Borrell and raised the bar for cooperation between Europe and Russia. Russia’s new line is that it is ready to cooperate with the West, but only for its own own terms and only when there are no more attempts to put pressure on the Kremlin through the use of sanctions
The Russian Foreign Ministry also announced the expulsion of three diplomats from Poland, Germany and Sweden during the joint press conference in an extremely aggressive move
According to the EU, Russia has violated Navalny’s human rights: “I warned the diplomatic head of the EU that I would set an example in response to the Catalans if he presented this subject at such an angle at a press conference Sentenced to 12 years or more in prison for participating in the organization of the referendum on the independence of Catalonia, “said the Minister
According to Lavrov, “individual EU member states” had assured Russia that they “were against the sanctions” because “they realized that this would lead to nothing”. Some countries like Cyprus are dependent on Russian business and last summer did Blocked sanctions against Belarus under pressure from Moscow Other countries like Serbia and Hungary are openly turning to Russia to cooperate, while others like Italy are taking a more lenient position than hardliners like Poland and the Baltic states
New EU sanctions against Russia are dwindling and less likely after Lavrov’s statement Borrell said during his visit to Moscow that “not one” EU member state has proposed new sanctions against Russia. While technically this may be true, both Poland have and the Baltic states have already openly called for new sanctions
