The Matrix 4 will arrive and be available for streaming the same day it hits theaters Yes, on Aug On September 20, 2019, more than 20 years after the first Matrix film was released, Variety brought the news that a fourth film in the trilogy will soon go into production

When the first film was released at the height of 2000, it fed on people’s fears about the future by addressing the relationship between technology and the ‘real world’, ‘Though our world didn’t end in 2000 (for the better or bad), people’s fears and curiosity about technology have only increased, and theories that we are all living in a simulation have become increasingly popular in recent years

The plot of the Matrix films – people who are used as a source of energy for sentient machines and exist in a simulated world, “our” world, the Matrix – has undoubtedly encouraged such a philosophy, and the possibilities for action for the fourth Films are ripe for even wilder ideas based on how the world has changed over the past two decades

Has box office sales of more than $ 1.6 billion worldwide, the first three Matrix films made an indelible impact on pop culture, spawning video games and an anime film, and have been quoted and faked in countless other media outlets (Who * did * not try to perform the backward leaning slow motion evasive maneuver IRL?)

Given the high box office revenue and impact on public awareness, it is surprising that we got a new installment not sooner, but better late than never Since we know you’re as excited about this news as we are, here’s everything we know about The Matrix 4 so far

Oh, and before we get into the details, the Matrix 4 is definitely not a remake, at least two former cast members are confirmed to be returning Since they are significantly older now (although they might not look like that) it wouldn’t make sense for it to be a prequel either, as we expect this to be a full sequel to the series

Variety has confirmed that both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss from the original trilogy will repeat their respective roles as protagonist Thomas A Anderson (aka Neo, aka The One) and Trinity for Matrix 4

Most recently, Reeves starred in another big budget action film franchise, John Wick, as the eponymous antihero, in addition to Winona Ryder and Pixar’s newest toy in the rom-com Destination Wedding of Amazon Prime Video Story film Toy Story 4 as a Canadian Motorcycle stunt rider Duke Caboom

Meanwhile, Moss joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as nail-solid Jessica Jones attorney Jeri Hogarth, a character who also appeared on sister shows like Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Defenders, all of which were recently canceled by Netflix

It is not yet known if other prominent cast members, including Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus, will return

The Matrix 4 will be HBO Max’s big (early) Christmas present for fans December 2021 will be released

The last time we left The Matrix with The Matrix Revolutions in 2003, the machines were at war with the people of Zion and it was up to Neo to make a deal to save all existence which resulted in a fight between Neo and Agent Smith, the latter of which posed a potentially greater threat than the machines. Neo sacrificed himself to exterminate Smith and restart the Matrix, creating a temporary peace in Zion

Unfortunately, little is known about the plot of the fourth film at the moment, other than that it “takes place in the world of The Matrix”. Since Neo is apparently dead, it will be interesting to see Reeves get back into the franchise Given the overwhelmingly positive response to the Matrix 4 news on social media, we’re sure to see more details soon”

As of now, the movie will only be referred to as Matrix 4, but that title will likely change closer to the movie’s release date (similar to Bond 25 who announced its official title, No Time to Die yesterday)

Given the titles of the two existing Matrix sequels – The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions – the chances are we get another R-word subtitle Renegade? Restitution? Reloaded? Okay, so while these are all bad guesses, stay tuned for updates as we learn more

Lana Wachowski of the Wachowskis, the sister team that wrote and directed the first three Matrix films, will return to write and direct Matrix 4 Wachowski’s short-lived but iconic Netflix show Sense8 was written by Lana’s sister, Lilly, reportedly won’t be returning for reasons unknown, but it’s safe to say the film is still in good hands
