CHER has admitted that she found it “very difficult” to accept her son Chaz Bono as a trans

The pop icon, 74, confessed that Chaz’s transition from female to male between 2008 and 2010 was “not easy” at first

Chaz, 51, who was born as a chastity to Cher and the late Sonny Bono, came out as a lesbian before his transition

Cher admitted that as a staunch advocate of the LGBTQ community, she was surprised by her initial reaction

“It was very unlike me to have a problem with Chaz being gay in the beginning, and that’s how it went away,” she told CNN

“Then we talked about [whether Chaz] had been transgender for many years and [he] said,” No, I don’t want [transition] “And then he went and said, ‘OK, I want to do this’”

Cher – who saved “the world’s loneliest elephant” last month – recalled, “But it wasn’t easy. I remember calling and the old [voicemail] message was on the phone and it was very difficult

Chaz began the transition in 2008, publicly announced it in 2009, and graduated in 2010

Chaz, writer and actor, was also the first transgender star to appear on Dancing With The Stars in 2011

Cher said Chaz is now “incredibly happy” and in a relationship with former child star Shara Blue Mathes

“Especially during puberty it felt like the expectations around me were changing or how I should behave, but it also felt like my body was literally giving me away

“I’ve gone from being a very athletic, no-nonsense little kid to a very curvaceous woman. It was just terrible for me”

The actor added that Cher initially struggled with his transition, but he never “doubted” her “love” for him

“The hard thing for my mom is that people forget that she is a parent because she is a public figure and because she has the personality to be so cool and progressive,” he explained

“The truth is, many parents never speak to their transgender children again. That is not the case in my family There is no doubt about their love for me

“Now everything is so easy and effortless I feel like I’m on the same pitch as everyone else”
