Leicester’s increasingly lost pursuit of Premier League leaders Manchester City suffered a severe blow when Arsenal came in from behind and took a formidable win at King Power Stadium
One miserable afternoon at the end of a terrible week for the Foxes, they had also carried influential winger Harvey Barnes on a stretcher with one leg in braces to add to their already significant injury problems
For the hosts, who received an early tonic for the exit from the Europa League during the week, it had started well when Youri Tielemens was allowed to run unhindered to the right before he shot a low shot into the farthest corner in just six minutes
Refusing to be compromised, however, Arsenal took control of the game with impressive attacking intent and far more fluidly than Leicester
David Luiz brought them level and found space in the penalty area to fend off a header from Willian’s free kick
Alexandre Lacazette then gave them the lead after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) assessed that Wilfred Ndidi had blocked Nicolas Pepe’s shot into the box with an outstretched arm
It was the second lucky time for the Gunners, who previously received a penalty on the field but were then downgraded to a free kick after VAR ruled that the attack on Pepe had taken place just outside the field
Ivory Coast striker Pepe was there himself and tipped a largely unguarded net after Willian’s pass diverted his path
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta actually decided on Sunday to rest a number of key players, including Bukayo Saka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, whose late winner won the Europa League game against Benfica on Thursday
It came with a potential cost, however, as Emile Smith Rowe – such a bright spark in recent months – had to leave the field injured in the first half
The Foxes’ sixth home defeat this season leaves them 10 points behind a Manchester City side who have won their last 20 games
Arsenal move up to ninth place, eight points below the top four, but with renewed interest in events above in the table
When Arteta named a stronger team on paper for the Europa League tie against Benfica and rested key players at King Power, he seemed to suggest that success in Europe was the best way for his team to get back into the Champions League depicted
That may still be the case, but what the Spaniard and his squad proved on Sunday is that they are far more capable than they have shown for much of this season
Granted, they got off to a terrible start and practically waved Tielemens to his early opening target
But they didn’t allow the incident to change the game plan – one that should make the game meaningful to Brendan Rodger’s side
Apart from the goals, Willian shot a low shot right past the post Luke Thomas’ excellent pushing tackle denied Pepe from close range, and substitute Aubameyang threw a shot just wide
With eight points and four more teams between them and fourth-placed West Ham, a late arrow for the Champions League spots remains a long shot for the Gunners, but with big players shooting and having talent in reserve, they’re on a good place to challenge your final goal
After some players rested on their disappointing midweek defeat to Slavia Prague, the Foxes were back to their best but that still meant the absence of Wesley Fofana, fellow defense James Justin and especially James Maddison
The English midfielder’s creative energy was noticeably lacking on Sunday and Kelechi Iheanacho was unable to replace her as a replacement
When Barnes – besides Tielemens the only man who really put Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno to the test – left on a stretcher, he robbed the foxes of further offensive spark, which made the martialing of Jamie Vardy much easier for the Gunners / p>
Leicester have points on the bench, but Rodgers now faces the challenge of making sure his team regains some momentum and doesn’t slip out of the Champions League qualifying spots too late, as they did last season
Leicester faces a tough trip to Burnley on Wednesday, starting at 6:00 p.m. GMT Coincidentally, this is also the next game against Arsenal, traveling to Turf Moor next Saturday (12:30 p.m.)
