It’s been almost a year since we last took a trip to the Nonnatus house in Poplar
But our favorite midwives will be back when Call the Midwife’s Christmas Special airs on BBC One on Christmas Day
The last episode of the ninth series aired in late February and a fight to save the nursing home was a success – but only for a year
And Valerie was broken when her grandmother was hospitalized and diagnosed with cancer and later died in emotional scenes
When we return to the series, the midwives will be in December 1965, taking Sister Monica Joan to the hospital, while the arrival of a traveling circus provides an exciting opportunity for Nurse Crane
But it won’t come as a surprise that the cast and crew at Call the Midwife have had to make changes to the way they film and act on set
Although we won’t see the difference, these famous birth scenes had to be adjusted in order for the filming to be Covid Safe So how did you do it?
Ella Bruccoleri, who plays sister Frances, told RadioTimes that she was not allowed to have contact with the babies in any scene
“We need to be offset so they can tune in So it’s like a super cohesive sentence, “she explained
Not only that, the actual mothers of the babies acted as body doubles for the actors to film safely
“It’s the mothers who dress up like us and have to stand up for these recordings,” revealed Ella. “So the mothers wear all the habits and things”
And every person who plays a mother who is going to hold a baby had to be tested for coronavirus
The only change you’re likely to notice is that the actors now wear surgical masks during medical scenes, but that’s not unusual this year
