Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton was knighted in the 2021 New Years list officially announced on Wednesday evening

The knighthood was bestowed at the end of a year when Hamilton hit Michael Schumacher’s record of seven F1 world titles, surpassing the German F1 victory record of 91, while the British driver also pursued a campaign to increase diversity across the board of motorsport through the establishment of the Hamilton Commission

It comes 12 years after receiving an MBE for services to motorsport in late 2008, the season he won his first world title

Hamilton is the third F1 world champion to be knighted after Jack Brabham (1978) and Jackie Stewart (2001) The honor also went to Stirling Moss (2000)

In addition, pre-war racers and land speed record breakers Henry Segrave (1929) and Malcolm Campbell (1931) were knighted

Aside from the drivers, the founders of the Williams F1 team, Frank Williams and Patrick Head, did in 1999 and 2015 knighthood received

Hamilton was knighted at the age of just 35, despite not being the youngest athlete to be recognized in modern times

Tennis star Andy Murray was 29 when he was inducted into the 2017 New Year Honors list after his second win at the Wimbledon tennis championship, while cyclists Bradley Wiggins and Chris Hoy were both 32 years old

The new F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, who officially starts work in January, has paid tribute to Hamilton

“Lewis is a real giant in our sport and his influence is enormous both inside and outside of a car,” said the Italian. “What he has achieved is phenomenal and more is to come

“All of us in F1 congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition of his achievements and look forward to seeing more of his brilliance in 2021”

“Lewis is one of the greatest racing drivers of all time and the most successful British athlete of his time,” added Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff

“He has long been known around the world for his athletic achievements That year, he combined his excellence on the track with a strong voice to fight discrimination in every way he was a 2020 leader

“The news that he is about to be knighted shows he is now receiving the recognition he has earned during a career of unprecedented success in motorsport

“Great Britain can be very proud to have a champion and ambassador of the caliber Sir Lewis Hamilton”

Earlier this month, Hamilton received recognition from the UK public when he was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year for the second time, having previously won the prestigious award in 2014

He also won the Laureus World Sports Award 2020 as Sportsman of the Year and shared it with soccer player Lionel Messi
