Nicky Campbell revealed how he found out about his bipolar diagnosis after “falling to the ground crying”

The 59-year-old Radio 5 Live presenter opened about the moment he learned he had the disease and the scary moment when he realized “something was wrong”

The journalist revealed it all in a new interview on The One Show on Tuesday night, where he appeared to speak about his new memoir, One Of The Family – Why A Dog Called Maxwell Changed My Life

Alex Jones asked him how it all worked out for him and when he knew it was time to seek professional help

“In the book, you bravely reveal you have been diagnosed with bipolar can you bring us back to the day you knew something was wrong?” she asked the star

Nicky explained to his wife, Tina, that something was wrong for a while, admitting he had a “massive obsession” and was “prone to depression” – which she knew about

Explaining the day he “broke down”, Nicky continued, “I was doing a radio show on Radio 5 Live Breakfast with my brilliant colleague Rachel Burden. She is such a good woman, she kind of knew when I was not there was and she would cover me up She is just wonderful “

He added, “I love animals, I think we need to take care of animals – they are so exploited I was obsessed with them I wanted to save every single animal

“One morning I was looking at some elephants that had died on a railway line in India and I was just completely helpless

“I went down to Euston Station to go to Manchester, Salford, which is where the 5 live studios were, and collapsed on the floor crying

Nicky added, “Since I was I called Tina and said,” This happened, I’m not sure I can continue “She said,” Come home come and look at the kids, come back to me and look at Maxwell ‘

Nicky was diagnosed with bipolar disorder early last year – a mental illness that affects your mood

He says his beloved Labrador Maxwell helped him change his life and understand his past in his new book out this month

During his chat on The One Show, Nicky revealed that his adoptive mom, Sheila, who passed away in December 2019, had a well-deserved goodbye when she sadly passed away before the coronavirus pandemic began and restricted funerals to small groups of people were

“She was 96, she was the life and soul of the party, we were so lucky she left before all of this, we had a funeral and we had a lot of people there, we celebrated their lives just thank my blessings that this was the case

“She was the best woman I have ever known My adoptive father, my real father, he was the best man I ever knew I was so lucky I had a great family”
