Education Secretary Betsy DeVos resigned Thursday evening, blaming President Donald Trump for rhetoric fueling the “incomprehensible” invasion of the U. S. Capitol from a lot of his followers

DeVos is the second member of Trump’s cabinet to be eliminated over Wednesday’s uproar that flooded the halls of Congress and postponed confirmation of Joe Biden’s presidential election victory

Earlier Thursday, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said she would resign. A number of other Trump administration officials have also resigned over the riot since Wednesday

In a letter to Trump saying she would step down on Friday, DeVos listed the successes she and Trump had made in education policy

“We should highlight and celebrate the many achievements of your government on behalf of the American people,” wrote DeVos

“Instead, we need to clean up the chaos caused by violent protesters who overran the US Capitol to undermine people’s business, “she wrote

“This behavior was incomprehensible to our country,” wrote DeVos. “There is no doubt about the influence your rhetoric had on the situation, and it is a turning point for me”

On Wednesday, Trump spoke to a crowd of supporters outside the White House during a more than hour-long utterance, the president recycled false claims about the election victory and repeated allegations, unsupported by evidence, that Biden was declared the winner for electoral fraud became

Trump also said, “We will have to fight much harder” and urged supporters to march to the Capitol, where Congress began the vote counting process

The crowd soon turned into a mob that swarmed wildly through the halls of Congress, terrifying lawmakers and staff who sought refuge where they could. Four people died in chaos

DeVos noted that “amazing kids watch and learn from all of this”

“I believe we all have a moral obligation to make good judgment and model the behavior we hope will emulate,” wrote DeVos

She said she resigned “to support the oath I took on our Constitution, our people and our freedoms”

In her own resignation letter, Chao had said: “Yesterday our country had a traumatic and completely avoidable event when supporters of the President stormed the Capitol building after a rally he had spoken of”

“As I am sure for many of you, it worried me deeply that I just can’t put it aside,” said Chao,

Chao is the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky, who refused to approve Trump’s efforts to have Congress block the electoral college’s confirmation of Biden as the presidential winner

Other officials stepping down as a result of the uprising included Tyler Goodspeed, acting chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, Deputy National Security Advisor Matt Pottinger, and Trump’s Special Representative for Northern Ireland, Mick Mulvaney, who was once his chief of staff
