The 41 Duke basketball team under Mike Krzyzewski should host a Coppin State program that emerged from an 11-20 campaign, no problem extending one of the legend’s most notable streaks

You see, the Blue Devils have since lost 80-79 overtime from what was then the No. 1 do not drop the season opener 13 Stanford on Nov 11, 1999, at Madison Square Garden (this Duke squad then fell back to the then No. 1 UConn one night later, before 18 consecutive wins are settled)

So that’s currently 20 wins in a row for the Blue Devils in official debuts. And of course, these aren’t losses in the season openers this century

Admittedly, the run includes 17 home games and many wins against Presbyterians, Belmont, Siena, etc.

On the flip side, the more recent series includes the 34-point demolition of then No. 2 Kentucky in 2018 and the encouraging 68-66 defeat of then No. 3 Kansas in 2019 (both Ws came as part of the Champions Classic on neutral floors)

Needless to say, the Blue Devils under Coach K are generally anything but rusty. After all, the Hall of Famer’s only other season opening L came in November as head coach of Duke 28, 1981, in double overtime at the Cameron Indoor Stage against the then unclassified Vanderbilt

The 266 days since Duke’s last game in the 2019-20 season – an 89-76 home win over North Carolina on Senior Night – marks the longest inter-game drought for the Blue Devils in 267 days who separated the game seasons 1981-82 and 1982-83

The matchup against Coppin State marks the final date for a Duke season opener since the program welcomed Canisius to Cameron Indoor on December 1, 1992

Finally, when the No. 9 Blue Devils and unranked Eagles tap into Durham at 2 p.m. on Saturday on ACC Network Extra, it will be the 13th Duke Team to debut in the AP poll’s top 10, and it will also be 25th Duke team in a row that ranks in the top 10 (the longest) such streak in the country by 10 years at some point in the season)
