Former Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields was named the new Police Chief on Wednesday after nearly a year in the Louisville, Kentucky division in the national spotlight following the Breonna Taylor case

Shields “will focus on the steps needed to restore residents’ confidence,” especially those that have traditionally been marginalized, said Fischer

“There is a lot to heal across the country and here in Louisville,” Shields said Wednesday. “Louisville and LMPD have an opportunity to get this right and create a model for other cities to follow, and I believe If LMPD identifies the way in which they can respond to their communities in a way that meets public expectations and demonstrates the ability to hold their officials accountable, then we have achieved that success “

“I pledge to begin my work here with an emphasis on rebuilding community trust” and combating gun violence, she said
