Although there were a few commentators defending Roderick’s teaching style, the majority of responses shared on Twitter were critical, many voicing concerns that his daughter had been hungry during the six-hour ordeal and slammed Roderick for making the child so was frustrated that it was crying

Roderick first took on the notoriety He updated his Twitter biography with the title “Bean Dad since 2021But since then he has deleted the account as well as his Instagram profile

Roderick is co-host of at least four podcasts, according to his Twitter biography. One of these podcasts is a project he started with the jeopardy legend Ken Jennings called Omnibus

According to the podcast website, the show should be “an encyclopedic reference of strange but true stories put together as time capsules for future generations” on Roderick’s bio on the website, he jokingly wrote that he and Jennings “acted as authorities for absolutely everything consider ”

A search for business records on the Washington Secretary of State’s website reveals Jennings and Roderick Omnibus, LLC registered as of September 2019. In the filing under “Nature of Business” they described it as “Entertainment, Arts and Recreation” Jennings and Jennings Roderick were both listed as “governors” of the company

If that calms anyone, I know John personally as (a) a loving and attentive father who (b) tells stories about his own irascibility in about ten podcasts a week This site is so stupid

Jennings has defended his business partner’s parenting skills on Twitter Jennings wrote, “If this calms anyone, I know John personally as (a) a loving and attentive father who (b) tells stories of his own irascibility in ten podcasts a week This page is so stupidJennings also joked, “Very jealous and upset that my podcast co-host is going to be a dictionary entry and I never will”

Roderick appears in an indie rock band called “The Long Winters” founded in 2011. According to the band’s website, Roderick sings, plays guitar and writes songs. He joked about himself in the bio section:

John is widely recognized as one of America’s preeminent artists, credited with reviving the dying Seattle music scene and reviving the rock genre He also writes his own press bios.John is a central figure in the Northwest music scene, yet still maintains his underdog status by being both dangerously nervous and completely huggable unlike the established Seattle practice, John is equally talented on almost every instrument (except on the guitar, which he is even more talented on) and has made it nearly impossible for other musicians to find work in Washington State and effectively play ALL the music that needs to be played.John is also a widely recognized journalist, widely quoted one Author and philosopher, a prima ballerina, a cowboy and an astronaut

Roderick also has a music company called Beats Working Music, and registered the company as an LLC in Washington State in February 2019

According to his Facebook page, Roderick grew up in Anchorage, Alaska and studied comparative history at the University of Washington in his profile, he also noted that he studied philosophy at Gonzaga University

So I said, “How do you think this works?” She studied it and placed it on the side of the can. She struggled for a while and said with a big, dramatic sigh, “Would you just open the can, please?” Apocalypse Dad was overjoyed: A teaching moment just fell into my lap!

Roderick stated on Twitter that the saga would be released on Jan. January began when his 9-year-old daughter told him she was hungry while he was working on a puzzle. He suggested that she “make baked beans” and instructed her to “open a can and put it in a pot for the child brought him the can and asked how he could open it

Roderick wrote that he quickly realized that he had never taught his daughter how to use a can opener “What kind of apocalypse father doesn’t teach his kid how to use a manual can opener?!?” But instead of demonstrating or offering a verbal explanation, Roderick encouraged his daughter to find out for herself

Roderick turned his attention back to the puzzle when his daughter “grunted and groaned to get the thing” before finally “collapsing in a frustrated bunch,” saying Roderick then tried to accompany his daughter after he found that she had figured out how part of the can opener worked but was stuck on the clamp step ”

At that point she said “I don’t want baked beans” and marched away. Apocalypse Dad went into full “The Road” mode! “Honey, none of us will have another bite today until we get into that can of beans. She screamed,” AUGH! ” like Lucy Van Pelt. She read a book for a while

But his daughter instead told him, “I hate you” before explaining, “I don’t want baked beans” Roderick wrote as a motivation, he said to his daughter, “Honey, none of us will have another bite today until we get into that can of beans, she screamed and paused for a while from the can opener

The kid eventually returned to the can opener and kept trying. As the Twitter thread resumed, Roderick explained his daughter’s efforts and eventually discovered that even if she figured out the correct technique, the can opener might still not work He wrote: “I had forgotten how nitpicky the tool really is, especially when it comes to the flat tire. You had everything in a row! But the cutting wheel is a little wobbly (by nature) and you really have to step on it to get it You know the feeling? You can fire the damn thing wrong! “

But as Roderick wrote, his daughter finally got the can of baked beans and carried it triumphantly into the kitchen. Roderick said he congratulated his daughter by “standing perfectly at attention and welcoming her efforts and ingenuity”

The Swing-a-Way can opener is a little voodoo doll for us now.It will appear as an allegory many more times in your life, you can be sure of that. You know that too.But this is an allegory of triumph I wish I had more of it for myself I wish I had more stories like this

Roderick closed the Twitter thread by acknowledging that his parenting style could be “angry,” but was looking forward to using the can opener incident as a metaphor for other lessons in his daughter’s life: “I am proud of her too I know I am angry I know this is parenting theater in a way I suffer from a lack of perseverance myself and like all parents throughout history I try to correct my own mistakes in raising my child You sees The Swing-a-Way Can Opener is now a little voodoo doll to us. It will appear as an allegory many times in your life, you can be sure you know that too But this is an allegory of triumph I wish I do had more of it for me I wish I had more stories like this ”

In the last tweet in the thread, Roderick joked: “The only problem now is that she wants to open every F ****** can in the house!”

I can’t say which is more disturbing the terrible incident or the fact that you narcissistically wrote it down to the last detail

Roderick’s long Twitter thread quickly caught a lot of attention from critics who felt they had taken the lesson too far. A common problem was that the child was too hungry @a_queer_ius asked, “All I hear is mine Father said at the time that I was hungry and that for no good reason he would not let me eat for another six hours””As did you ever go through this as a kid? Have you been starving for too long and just feeling sick and wanting to pass out? No? Then don’t do it to the child ”

Roderick assured that his 9-year-old daughter did not starve to death “6 hours, not six days. She had a full breakfast”

@AlfieJapanorama argued that Roderick should have used a different method and actually taught his daughter how to use the can opener Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day Teach a man to fish and he will Eat foreverThis is how I remember Not … “… Throw the fishing rod on the ground & expects the man to teach himself how to fish …” “Another Twitter user, @nnamrak, defended Roderick by replying that the lesson got more to do with finding a solution when there is a problem “Yes, but this is actually a very good skill to learn: finding a tool by yourself It’s actually the core of problem solving. It’s important because you’re not getting into it Have someone in your life to show you things ”

Yes, but this is actually a very good skill to learn: figuring out a tool for yourself. It’s actually the core of problem solving. It’s important because you don’t always have someone in your life to show you things

@apoxon identified herself as a teacher and argued, “When a child is frustrated to the point of tears, you’ve lost your teachable moment”

@stephenablack was among the critics accusing Roderick of child abuse, “He’s abusive. He’s delighted at the power he wields over his child, who he finds has issues with spatial orientation, process visualization and the.” The order of service has “Like so many perpetrators, he sees the damage, but is unmoved and believes,” I’m doing this for your own good ‘”

@timaree_leigh noted that Roderick might later regret this particular method of teaching, “As someone raised by similar parents, congratulations for teaching your daughter that she doesn’t need you, and it will make her super self-sufficient it will be much easier for them to turn you off completely as an adult if you continue to be numb and unsupportive ”

The best part about these parenting trolls being concerned is that they keep thinking about what child abuse it is like to deprive my child of baked beans for six hours.Six hours is the length of time between meals, lunch noon, dinner at six you literally say CHILD ABUSE

But Roderick has dismissed the criticism in a later tweet, arguing that those who beat him didn’t follow him on social media and that they therefore lived in “two different worlds”

He also wrote that he found it “amazing” that some people perceived his decision to let his daughter figure out the can opener for herself as child abuse. He continued, “The only thing people are more sensitive about than that Parenting style, dog ownership is ”

Roderick also addressed concerns that his daughter was hungry: “The best part about these parenting trolls are concerned is they keep thinking about what child abuse it is, my child baked beans for six hours to withdraw”Six hours is the time between lunch at noon and dinner at six. You literally say CHILD ABUSERoderick has now deleted his personal Twitter account

Roderick has been known to post comments on Twitter that may be controversial or offensive The can opener incident prompted some social media users to share screenshots of tweets that were accredited by Roderick in 2012

For example, @fabricdragon posted screenshots of tweets that Roderick wrote to another podcaster that tweeted, “Should I rape you with my gun?” and “I’ll rape you next time I see you Bad rape, not a funny rape”

Another screenshot shows a response Roderick wrote to a soccer mom who said her children’s team was called “the stormtroopers” but other parents “made us change them because of the Nazis” “Roderick replied, “Jews are ruining everyone’s fun”

@BirdRespecter has shared several screenshots allegedly by Roderick that are gaining traction on Twitter. One of the tweets from 2012 appears to have been a comment on the language: “Seriously, you could say a band is“ gay “Or a haircut is“ delayed ”“ They are elastic words N ***** is just a bow ”

Roderick also described Adolph Hitler as “entertaining. In a 2013 tweet, Roderick seemed to be commenting on how the Holocaust could have been avoided if Hitler had been praised earlier in life,” A better plan is to go back in time and really praise Hitler for his part! Buy his pictures! Tell him he’s brilliant! “

I know what it is like when Twitter is after you, holding up your jokes as something other than what they are, and I remember very few people standing up for me so I stand for John one regardless of his unwillingness to open a can of beans

Comedian Michael Ian Black is among those defending Roderick Black tweeted Roderick’s old tweets were “obviously jokes, not evidence of heinous beliefs,” added, “I know what it’s like when Twitter is after you and uphold your jokes as something other than what they are and I remember very few people standing up for me so I stand up for John regardless of his unwillingness to open a can of beans ”
